We’re really excited to get #ltwup off the ground and going again after a hiatus for most of the last year and a half. We had a good and enthusiastic group at Harbour Lights (they have made some amazing changes so go check them out on the next sunny day) in April and we gathered some input from attendees about future tweetups. Events in the next few months will be at locations that come from that list! If you have an idea for a great tweetup location, let us know! Are you a restaurant/bar owner who would like to host a fun, social group? Hit us up on Twitter at @ltwup or check with any of the organizations listed on the sidebar —>
Future Lawrence evening* Tweetup locations:
- Cielito Lindo
- Louise’s/Louise’s West
- Quinton’s
- On the Border
- Replay
- Gaslight Tavern
- Set ‘em Up Jacks
- Wayne and Larry’s
We are also planning lunch tweetups again! For a list of all scheduled tweetups, please visit the event page.

Thanks to everyone who attended the tweetup at Pachamama’s last week! We had a great turnout of people from the Lawrence Tweetup group, Social Media Club of Lawrence and the Lawrence community.
A big thanks to the tweetup sponsors: Pachamama’s (@pachamamas), the Lawrence Public Library Foundation (@lawrencelibrary), Lawrence Modern (@lawrencemodern) and Philsquare (@philsquarehq).
Along with the opportunity to network with fellow social media users, the tweetup featured a short program about the Lawrence Public Library’s current capital campaign. Susan Brown, marketing director, explained that the library’s New Stories campaign includes a commitment to raise $1 million in private funds for the new building, in addition to the $18 million referendum that was passed by Lawrence voters on Nov. 2, 2010.
This project marks the first major upgrade to the library in almost 40 years, and the facility will feature a larger children’s room, additional computers, reading and study rooms, meeting spaces and additional parking, as well as an outdoor community space.
The campaign is very close to reaching the $1 million mark already, and the social media community is invited to participate in a social media fundraising campaign to help reach this goal.
Tom Harper of Lawrence Modern announced a matching pledge to support these efforts. He will match all dollars raised by the social media community, up to $1000.
Phil Martinez of Philsquare kicked off the fundraising by announcing a $50 donation.
The rest is up to us!
What can you do?
Make a donation
- Visit the Lawrence Public Library Foundation’s website to make an online donation. Under the program designation box, select the New Stories- Tweetup option so we can track all dollars received through the social media campaign.
- Donations can also be made by phone (785.843.3833 x 131) or by mail (Lawrence Public Library Foundation, PO Box 973, Lawrence, KS 66044). Be sure to indicate that your donation is part of the Tweetup campaign.
Tweet about it
- Share this post with your followers and encourage them to retweet to their followers
- Use the hashtag #newstories in your tweets
Facebook
- Share this post with your friends and encourage them to share it with their friends
Blog about it
- Have a blog? Share your library story- write about your childhood library or share memories of your school library or the Lawrence library with your readers.
- Share a link to your blog on your Facebook or Twitter accounts; post it on the Lawrence Public Library’s Facebook page; tag it with the #newstories hashtag.
These are just a few ways you can use social media to help spread the word about the New Stories campaign. Use your creativity to help share this information!
Let’s show the Lawrence community the power of social media and help our local library reach their fundraising goal. And remember, if we raise $1000 through social media channels, Lawrence Modern will make a matching donation of $1000!
This campaign will run through Thanksgiving.

Join us for an April Tweetup at the Sandbar! If you haven’t experienced the indoor hurricane or toy-filled tropical drinks at this landlocked beach bar, this month’s tweetup is the perfect opportunity.
- When: Wednesday, April 20
- Time: 7 p.m. to whenever
- Where: The Sandbar, 17 E. 8th St., Lawrence
Tweetups are a great place to meet fellow social media users in real life. Wouldn’t it be nice to put a face to that Twitter handle you’ve been talking to for the last six months? It might sound scary to meet a bunch of people for the first time, but the great thing about social media is that you feel like you already know the person long before you meet in real life. So don’t be shy, join us at the Tweetup!
The Sandbar’s drink specials on Wednesdays include $1 Dirty Banana shots and $3 Shark Attacks- two of the most popular drinks at the bar. There is no cover charge. We’ll have some snacks, and you’re welcome to bring your dinner with you or order food from the bar. The Sandbar has a great jukebox full of favorite tunes of the last six decades, and the indoor hurricane will likely blow through while mermaids dance on the bar. And don’t forget to check out the real sand beach upstairs!

Has it really been a year since our first anniversary party? Help celebrate two years of the Lawrence Tweetup group! The Lawrence tweetup was founded in January, 2009, at Borders Bookstore, and since then we’ve held monthly events to encourage local social media users to interact in real life. We’d love to see you at our next event!
- When: Thursday, February 24
- Where: Q5 Gallery, 615 1/2 Massachusetts (upstairs at Quinton’s)
- Time: 7 p.m. to whenever
The upstairs level of Quinton’s is home to the QuintEssential, or Q5, Gallery. The gallery hosts shows for downtown Lawrence’s Final Fridays art events every month, and we thought it would be a great location for a tweetup. Quinton’s serves food and drinks downstairs, and there’s also a bar upstairs.

In March 2009, Paul Smith traveled around the world relying on the goodwill of Twitter users. It was an amazing story that took Paul from the UK to New Zealand.
Read more about it here.
During this amazing journey Paul visited Lawrence and received a warm welcome from the local social media community.
He’ll be returning to Lawrence on Tuesday, October 26. Join him as he talks about his amazing Twitter adventure – a very real reminder that Twitter isn’t just about technology, it’s powered by people and relationships.
The lunch will take place in the Bird Dog Bar at The Oread Hotel. We held a lunch tweetup at The Oread back in July and not only enjoyed a great lunch but were lucky enough to be given a tour of the hotel, including a visit to the rooftop terrace where we were able to take some amazing photos of Lawrence from the City’s highest vantage point.
We’ll have that same opportunity this time. Tours will be available after lunch, and if the weather is nice we can head back to the rooftop. Bring your cameras!
Lunch will be at noon. Paul will speak during lunch.
Order from the Bird Dog menu.
Paul’s book “Twitchhiker: How One Man Traveled the World by Twitter” will also be available for purchase if you would like a copy for $15 (cash). A fantastic read!
The Twitchhiker trip to Kansas is being presented by Social: IRL and Start Thinking with the support of Suzuki of Wichita, Meads Corner, Chipotle, and The Oread Hotel.
Check out the Facebook event page for more information and RSVP.
